Efficient development and enthusiastic users: As a Technical Writer, Birgit is part of one of our diverse teams at OTTO. Part of her role is to communicate complex technical content in a comprehensible way and build bridges between tech experts and information seekers to help users at OTTO solve their problems. But what excites her most about her job and what are the three superpowers that support her? We asked her about this and much more.
"As a technical writer, I am a bridge builder between tech experts and information seekers. My goal is to prepare complex technical content in a way that is appropriate for the target group and to convey it in a well-structured and understandable way. The focus is clearly on guiding users* and helping them find solutions to their problems and achieve their goals."
"With technical documentation, we at OTTO relieve developers of repetitive support questions by making the answers easily accessible or documenting process flows that make their work more efficient. In this way, we help developers to focus on the development of new customer functions. We also enable efficient knowledge transfer by centrally maintaining and updating content. And last but not least, we make it easy for users to use our applications by providing them with relevant content tailored to their specific needs."
"What I love about my job is the high degree of creative freedom and the fact that, in terms of strategy and organizational development, you never reach the perfect state and are done. We are still on our way when it comes to true cross-functional collaboration across divisional boundaries between business and IT. This requires pattern change and we are relentlessly exercising this muscle. It's not always easy, but at the same time makes my job challenging and never boring."
"Being involved in the design and development of two developer portals as a product owner was really cool! https://developer.epages.com/ and https://api.otto.de/portal/ were created in collaboration with great colleagues. I can be creative, collaborate with a wide range of disciplines, exchange ideas with diverse target groups and, of course, really put my heart topic of technical writing in the spotlight."
" Communication skills, curiosity and empathy are particularly helpful. The constant and active exchange with colleagues and users is essential for gaining information and a deep understanding of topics. I'm constantly learning something new, which is really fun. Adapting to the respective exchange partners and picking up where they are is a very important aspect of my job."
"My current role can be well described with the three words pioneering, documentation and developer experience. It is important to me to firmly establish the role of technical writer in the company so that many more teams and users can enjoy good and helpful documentation."
"The atmosphere is super! Everyone is very committed, intrinsically motivated and contributes new impulses and ideas. It feels like we've been working together hand in hand forever. New colleagues are always warmly welcomed and supported. And we are very open and transparent with each other at all times."
That's whywomen in the tech sector are so important for us!
