Remote Work for students

From Bramfeld to the North Sea

Just get out, breathe in the sea air and switch off. Thanks to our mobile office offer, our interns and working students from all over Germany can also work with us. Our working students Louisa, Isabel and Caro from HR Marketing and University Recruiting recently showed that this is not a problem and that it is possible to be productive together. Without further ado, the three colleagues decided to pack their bags and relocate their mobile office to the North Sea island of Föhr.

For working students or interns, free calendars for spontaneous trips are often few and far between. This is one of the reasons why our mobile office policy also applies to our students. Whether from home, with the family or at any location within Germany - each team decides for itself how much work is done in the mobile office. But what other benefits does OTTO offer students and how did the three of them actually get to know each other? We asked them.

Hi Louisa, tell me, how did you come up with the idea of going to Föhr?

"Hi there, we've all been feeling very lost in university stress lately and it was time to get some fresh air. I'm currently working on my Master's thesis and just had to get out. Over lunch together at OTTO Kochwerk , we all realized that we were in a similar situation. So we spontaneously decided to go to Föhr together for a few days to pursue our work - or in my case, my Master's thesis."

And how difficult was it to put your plan into practice?

"Each team decides for itself in so-called collaboration sprints on which days we work together from the Otto Group Campus or Mobile Office, so that wasn't difficult at all. Within our teams, everyone is allowed to work from the mobile office, which is why no major coordination was necessary."

First work, then pleasure - or what did your everyday life look like?

"Everyone started the day at their own pace. Caro is a real early riser and went to get bread rolls in the morning while Isabel and I got ready and set the table. After breakfast together, we all sat down at the table and worked through our to-dos. At the end of the day, we cooked together, did sports and ended the evening with a movie together."

Isabel, but tell us something. How did you actually get to know each other?

"So actually at work. There is a huge student network at OTTO and there are regular lunch and coffee dates where students can network with each other. Caro and I, for example, moved to Hamburg for our studies and were very open to new contacts - so of course these events came in very handy. And at one of these coffee dates, we quickly realized that we got on well and have since become very good friends."

Caro, what other benefits do you enjoy as a student at OTTO?

"So what I like best is the flexibility in terms of students' schedules. We can arrange our working days to suit our timetable. We also have the opportunity to build up overtime in less stressful phases and then reduce it again during the exam phases, for example, which is of course super practical. If appointments change or we simply have to reschedule our week, we can easily swap days and work on other days of the week."
