Entry into the Digital & Consulting division
Many people are probably familiar with the saying "New paths are made by walking". After her first professional experiences in a digital consultancy, Marie decided to switch to the corporate side. Here we introduce you to the special features of internal management consultancy in the digital & consulting division.
Hello Marie! Who are you and what do you do at the Otto Group?
"Hi, I'm Marie, 29 years old and have been working as a Senior Digital Consultant in the Digital & Consulting division at the Otto Group since August 2021. I am involved in a variety of projects at different Group companies. The topics are always mixed, future-oriented and deal with what moves the Otto Group and the Group companies."
"I thought a business degree with a tech focus would be exciting."
"I did my Bachelor's and Master's degrees at the Technical University of Munich, both degrees in the field of technology and management-oriented business studies, but with different focuses. While I concentrated on the topics of Chemistry, Entrepreneurship & Innovation in my Bachelor's degree, my focus in my Master's degree was on Chemistry, Finance & Accounting. During my Master's, I also had the opportunity to study in Lisbon for half a year - which I of course took advantage of and enjoyed very much."
Which career entry did you choose?
"After I had my Master's degree in my pocket, I started working for a technology consultancy. There, as a technology consultant, I was responsible for software development (software integration & agilisation) for clients in the automotive industry, among other things. In addition, I was involved in digital transformation, process optimisation and project and requirements management as part of other projects."
What sparked your interest in the Otto Group?
"In fact, I already knew OTTO. I'm originally from Hanover and before I changed jobs I had already taken part in a number of tech events, such as the event series "From Tech to Tech" or the develop
What makes the Otto Group special for you?
"Why I ultimately chose my new job at the Otto Group Holding is primarily due to the values that the Group company and the company itself stand for. First and foremost, the cultural change and the courage to change with which the current challenges in digitalisation and the transformation to a platform are met. The fact that this is not only talked about, but also acted upon, inspires me to this day. Since the day-to-day business in my new team is a mixture of very strategic topics on the one hand and operational projects on the other, my tasks are very varied and everyday life is never boring. In addition, I had great confidence in OTTO as an employer right from the start. You can clearly see that the company is a value-oriented family business. The focus is clearly on the interests of the employees, which I already noticed in the interviews. Both the change of location from Munich to Hamburg and the career change were only an option for me here - and I don't regret the decision at all 😊".

How do internal and external management consultancy differ?
"Probably the biggest difference to my previous job is that general future topics such as digitalisation, health and e-commerce have moved more into focus. I am still involved in project work, but not with as strong a technical focus as before. Nevertheless, I still have contact with tech topics from time to time, which I am very happy about. What's also new is that in my previous position, I was no longer in contact with the company after a project was completed. That has changed today. Compared to external consulting, the clients we work with in Digital & Consulting are also colleagues. Today, I would describe my day-to-day work as very dynamic, multi-faceted and challenging. We work on solutions for a wide range of clients, from top management to our technical experts."
How does the experience from technology consulting help you with us?
"In my previous position, I was able to develop both professional and personal skills that will also help me in my new position. For example, it is easy for me to familiarise myself quickly with new topics. At the same time, I have a strong technical understanding, which enables me to grasp and abstract complex problems of customers. Dealing with new customers is easier for me now because they no longer vary so much."
What do you hope for your future in the Otto Group?
"I am offered many exciting topics and projects where I always learn something new, stay motivated and don't lose sight of the fun. Through the many further training opportunities, I hope to expand my professional expertise in such a way that I can eventually specialise in a subject close to my heart."
