One of our missions at OTTO is continuous development. To this end, we have developed our Leading Principles – ten guiding principles that provide our colleagues with orientation for important decisions and daily actions. They serve as a guide to help us achieve our corporate goals and strengthen our culture.
We have critically examined and further developed our leadership missions – but who actually benefits from this and how do the Leading Principles influence our everyday work? Our interview with Beate from Organizational Development reveals the answers and much more.
"My name is Beate and I started in Recruiting at OTTO in 2015. Since February 2018, I have been working as a Senior HR Manager in our Organizational Development and was instrumental in developing our Leading Principles. When our divisional board advocated for new ideas on leadership, I was immediately excited and wanted to be a part of it."
"The Leading Principles are 10 guiding principles on which we base our attitude and behavior. They provide us with a framework of orientation, particularly in challenging times, and enable us to achieve our corporate goals quickly, efficiently and sustainably. That is why our Leadership Principles apply to all employees. For managers, for lateral and specialist managers, and for every single colleague here in the company."
"While revising the original leadership mandates, we kept stumbling over the fact that much of what we understand by leadership also fits in with the approaches of self-leadership and personal responsibility – concepts that we have been strengthening and promoting in our corporate culture for years. So we came up with the idea of establishing the new guiding principles for all our colleagues. Our managers now have a role to play in both setting a good example and creating a framework for their teams to apply the Leading Principles on their own responsibility."
"We offer a variety of exchange opportunities and information materials. The aim is to develop a better understanding of what the Leading Principles mean for each and every one of us and how they guide our attitude and behavior at OTTO in order to be successful as an organization. This includes team workshops and surveys, but also adapted questions in leadership feedback and a gradual integration into HR tools, such as the culture matcher or our onboarding. We want to create awareness of why we make certain decisions and how they fit with the Leading Principles."
"Basically, the Leading Principles are all equally weighted. However, there may be times when we need to focus in order to overcome challenges. In 2023, we will focus on the Leading Principles 'Customer First', 'Think and Act Data', and 'Performance is Key', as this is where the most action is needed to be successful."
"I have two favorites. On the one hand, I really like 'Burning for Learning' because I like learning new things, moving out of my comfort zone and developing personally. But I also like 'Decide & fail fast' because I like to tackle topics boldly and just try them out. I think we should all allow ourselves to make more mistakes and also admit to them in order to learn from them and do better next time."
"Absolutely. On the one hand, applicants can check more easily whether they can identify with our corporate culture. Secondly, the Leading Principles will also play a central role in future job interviews. We can well imagine that we will ask applicants about their personal experiences based on their fit with our Leading Principles. This should ensure a successful collaboration for both sides."
Cooperation is the most important thing for us. That's why we as a company want to further strengthen what already works well in our cooperation today: openness, courage and a focus on results, freedom, short decision-making paths and sometimes a "controlled loss of control". In addition to the Leading Principles, we are helped in this by approaches such as Activity-Based Working, FutureWork and Hybrid Working.
