Our Junior HR Marketing Manager Cindy has done just that: she is about to complete her International Business M. Sc. degree and is currently in the final stages of her Master's thesis, which she is writing in cooperation with OTTO. We asked her about her personal experiences and reasons for this decision.
Hi Cindy! How long have you been working at OTTO and how did you find out about OTTO?
"I started in January 2023. At the time, I had just started my Master's degree and was looking for a new working student job. At my previous job, I had already come into contact with performance marketing in a job marketing context and fell in love with HR marketing. So I searched for jobs on LinkedIn and finally found what I was looking for at OTTO."
What were your tasks as a working student in online marketing?
"As a working student in online marketing, my focus was on marketing difficult-to-fill positions via channels such as Google, Instagram and LinkedIn. My tasks included creating image material, writing ad texts, planning and implementing campaigns and then evaluating performance.
At the same time, I also worked on larger campaigns and created the advertising material for our 2023 trainee campaign. I was also responsible for the tech blog . In this context, I was allowed to create the official OTTO tech account on Medium. In addition, I worked on numerous projects and became more and more involved with trainee marketing and the careers site."
How did the writing process for your Master's thesis go?
"The writing process for my master's thesis began with a look at the goals that the HR marketing team had set for the coming months. These goals served as a guide for me in finding a topic. In consultation with my team and my supervising professor, I ultimately decided on the topic of "Employer branding in the target group of school students". An online survey for 10th to 13th grade students then formed the basis for my further approach."
What challenges did you encounter and how did OTTO support you in overcoming them?
"I had great respect for meeting the requirements of my university and those of the team. However, my initial doubts quickly proved to be unfounded, as my team was just as enthusiastic about my topic as I was.
The biggest difficulty was recruiting enough students for my survey. In the end, I managed to recruit more than 340 participants through my personal network and OTTO in particular. I received valuable support from my colleague who is responsible for trainee marketing.
Another challenge was balancing work and my thesis. Flexible working hours and the opportunity to work in a mobile office helped me a lot in structuring my time."
What resources or expertise were particularly helpful?
"From a technical point of view, it was of course particularly helpful to write about a topic that I work on directly myself and can quickly become effective: Trainee marketing. I was able to draw on the many years of experience of my colleague Frauke as a resource. I will also be working with her on trainee marketing in the near future. In addition, the expertise of the entire employer branding team combined with my own professional experience was the perfect starting point for my topic."
Why did you decide to stay with OTTO?
"Reason number 1: My team! I have never experienced so much team spirit and appreciation in a professional context. We laugh together, but we are also creative and productive together. That's exactly how I wanted it to be.
Reason number 2: HR marketing as a marketing discipline simply appealed to me. I think it's great to market an employer that I can confidently say "I like working here!".
And reason number 3: The flexibility that OTTO offers me. From flexitime to mobile office, it's perfect for me."

What did you do after your working student job?
"I'm lucky enough to be able to stay in the team as Junior HR Marketing Manager! My main tasks will continue to focus on online marketing, the careers site and trainee marketing - precisely the areas in which I was already able to gain extensive insights and experience during my time as a working student."
And last but not least: What advice would you give to others who want to write their thesis with OTTO?
"Find a topic that inspires you personally and at the same time offers added value for the team. That way, you won't feel like you're being forced by the university to work on a topic. On the contrary, you can make a real contribution and combine your studies and work."
