Hi, I'm Matthias and I've been working as a software developer at OTTO since I finished my business informatics studies in 2008. I like to work on topics that generate a lot of business value, so it's always a highlight when I can provide a new feature that generates a lot of added value for OTTO .
During my early days at OTTO, I worked on the development of the partner platform. This is more or less the predecessor model of our current marketplace, only much smaller. As part of the restructuring, I was able to help build the current marketplace. In the meantime, my team is responsible for the processes of communication between customers and marketplace partners. My tasks include the development of architectures, the writing of work packages (stories) as well as the evaluation of efforts for their implementation, the development of the software, the deployment of new features, the error analysis and bug fixing, the operation of the software in a cloud-based environment and the quality assurance.
I am a late riser. I'm also a summer person and am in a good mood when the day starts with sunshine. If the weather is bad, I have to have a cup of tea. 😊 My working day starts at 9:00. I put on the headphones and it's off to the Daily.
My team works according to Scrum. As a result, there are fixed deadlines. These include the daily, the retrospective, review meeting, just to name a few. In the daily meeting, we talk as a team about what we achieved on the last working day, what challenges we encountered and what our goals are for the day. Afterwards, I start implementing new features together with a colleague. We usually use pair or mob programming for this. In the mornings, we often have meetings with colleagues where we talk about the effort and content of stories or new technologies and ideas are presented and discussed. Every week, we also have a rotating "Daily Action Dude", who takes care of any disruptions and requests from other teams within our team.
I usually don't take my lunch break until around 4:00 p.m., which is quite late. Since I work in a home office, the lunch breaks unfortunately take place without any exchange with my colleagues. Instead, I like to treat myself to a delicious pizza - but that's not something you should eat every day. Colleagues from an Indian company we work with introduced me to the lentil dish "Dal". It tastes super delicious and is also something for every day. 😊
Working with our Indian colleagues, I try to develop with my colleagues in the mornings and use the afternoons and evenings for organizational things, such as writing stories. We also work closely with other departments that submit requirements to us. We then check the feasibility and come up with technical solutions and possibly new features. Towards the end of the day, I check again to see if there are any unanswered questions from colleagues and if there is anything that needs to be done at short notice.
Thanks to the flexitime system , I can end my working day quite flexibly. On Fridays, for example, I usually finish work a little earlier. On the other days, it varies depending on whether there is still a lot to do or whether there are private appointments that I want or need to attend.
My team is great. If I had to describe it in three words, I would say: friendly, well-coordinated and respectful. We are a mix of different cultures, nationalities, men and women, younger and older with more or less professional experience. We know the strengths and weaknesses of the team members and support each other as best we can. Our interaction is trusting and respectful, so we can also discuss controversial opinions.
I also find other areas very exciting. The BI area sounds very interesting to me, for example. It's remarkable what insights can be gained from the data that OTTO has. The topic is probably so complex that one day would not be nearly enough to gain an overview.
