Welcome the New Year with Workation

Working where others go on vacation? Thanks to our newly introduced Workation regulation, our colleagues can now easily combine work and vacation. This makes it possible, for example, to welcome the new year in the sun instead of in cold and wet Germany.

Summer, sun, beach & work?

Our colleague Janus from Recruitment did it and worked remotely from Mallorca for the last days of 2022. We talked to him about his learnings and how Workation has changed his work routine.

Hello Janus! So it went south for you in December?

"I have always loved traveling and wanted to combine this passion with my job. Since September 2022, it has been possible for OTTO employees to work abroad in Europe for a limited time. Of course, I had to try that out right away. So I started the self-experiment and spent a few days in the southeast of Mallorca enjoying the sun."

First the work, then the pleasure - or how was that for you?

"I realized pretty quickly that I couldn't apply my old work rhythm to Mallorca. The sun also sets earlier here in December, which is why I said goodbye to the classic '9 to 5' pretty quickly. Instead, I tried to make the best use of our flexitime model and interrupted my working day with a 3-hour 'siesta'. This way, I was able to take full advantage of the last hours of sunshine and release some of my thought blocks for creative work over the course of the day."

What is your conclusion: Workation yes or no?

"In my opinion, Workation is a great thing and is especially suitable for a smoother transition to vacation. It can't replace a vacation, of course. But in my opinion, that shouldn't be the reason why you combine work with travel. Ultimately, it's about taking a break from everyday life to recharge your batteries and do something for your own well-being . After all, our work is only as good as we are. I would do Workation again at any time."

Our framework for Workation at a glance

When you start with us, you can take advantage of the Workation offer under a few conditions. You can work for us on a mobile basis for up to 30 working days per calendar year from other European countries, with a maximum of 10 working days per country. Important is a stable internet connection and of course a suitable working environment. This is the best way to combine work with your vacation.
