Working where others go on vacation? With a workation, you can easily combine work and vacation. For example, you can welcome the New Year in the sun instead of in cold and wet Germany. Spain, Denmark and France are particularly popular with OTTO.
We believe that all colleagues should work where it is best for them personally and for the task at hand. Last but not least, as an employer, we see workation as an opportunity to take a break from everyday life, recharge your batteries and actively do something for your own well-being. That is why we have made a conscious decision to include it in our benefits.
We asked our tech colleagues why they chose their respective destinations and how the workation has impacted their work routine.
Packing her suitcase again

"I've always wanted to try out what it feels like to get a little sun booster in the fall and winter. I'm convinced that the sun has a positive effect on our mood and also on our health and I wanted to experience this for myself."
"The reason is probably understandable for many: to escape the gray winter and soak up some sun. The Canary Islands were the southernmost point in Europe where there is pleasant T-shirt weather in February."
"It was great. Also because I added a vacation to the two weeks of workation. I was able to gain new experiences abroad for a total of four weeks without having to take my annual leave. Not only did I accidentally slip into a carnival parade, but I also danced in the evening in a T-shirt on the street with people I'd never seen before - that probably wouldn't have happened to me in Germany at this time of year."
Recharges her batteries at the beach
Nele, Product Manager IT
" My parents gave me the idea. They suggested I visit them during their vacation in Denmark. As I wanted to go further afield for my annual vacation, I ultimately decided on a combination of work and vacation. With Workation, I was able to enjoy the picturesque landscape of Løkken for two weeks and only had to take one week off."
"I used to go on vacation to Denmark every year as a child, but at some point I found it boring. Today, for me, Denmark means relaxing, switching off andrecharging my batteries. You can go for long walks on the beach, lie on the terrace and read or drive to the nearest town and take a stroll. For me, it's the perfect way to relax!"
"It was super practical for me to do the workstation first and then take time off. That way I already had the journey behind me and could start my vacation straight after the workation. I had also accumulated some overtime in advance so that I only had to work 5-6 hours a day during the workation (instead of the usual 7.5 hours). I usually started at 7 a.m. so that I could finish work at 1 p.m. and enjoy my free time for the rest of the day."

"I converted my van into a camper last year so that I could go traveling with it. Workation was the perfect opportunity for me to extend my planned trip by working from the road. I was able to move my workplace from my home office to the sea and enjoy the best of both worlds: I combined a love of travel and work and got to see so many new inspiring places."
"I've been to France several times to surf and deliberately chose a workstation in Moliets et Maa (Plage de Moliets). Here I could enjoy the endless beaches, breathtaking sunsets and waves after work. As my original trip was from Hamburg to Portugal, a stopover in France was an obvious choice. I also knew my way around the campsite and knew that I would find a stable internet connection there for my work."
"I would definitely do a workation again at any time. The opportunity to work remotely allowed me to "extend" my vacation flexibly , which I really liked. The collaboration with my team also worked really well. Where will I go next time? Most likely back to the south!"
