Last week, the employer rating platform Glassdoor named the 20 companies in Germany with the best work-life balance. The ranking is based on evaluations from the past twelve months - OTTO is in second place here, which is reason enough for us to take a look at the topic of work-life balance.
At OTTO, our colleagues have many different options at their disposal for balancing their work and private lives. Because for everyone, leeway for individual lifestyles, personal needs and family demands means something different - a flexible remote working model or parental leave for mothers and fathers, for example. OTTO supports its colleagues in their individual work scheduling to allow valuable time for private life in the right place. Because we are convinced that people who like to work live better. And vice versa.
To make this possible, a lot is being done at OTTO with our New Work initiative. The main aim is to integrate collaborative and flexible working into everyday working life and to strengthen the self-responsibility of each individual. Our vision is to enable everyone at OTTO to access work content at any time, from anywhere and via any device in order to achieve their individual tasks in the best possible way. In short, everyone can, may and should work where, when and how it suits them best.
In addition to flexibility, aspects such as digitization, agile structures and processes, flat hierarchies, and corresponding office concepts that promote creativity are also central. Of course, this initiative must be viewed as a process and will take a correspondingly long time. Our board member Katy discusses what challenges New Work offers in her blog.
How exactly is work-life balance reflected in our everyday working life at OTTO? In addition to a variety of possibilities, the following describes four examples of how we enable a personal balance between work and private life.
To ensure the best possible working atmosphere for the fulfillment of tasks, a wide variety of workstations are located on our campus. Appropriate equipment, including WLAN coverage, makes mobile working possible throughout the campus. For example, if a colleague wants to work in a concentrated manner, there are dedicated quiet workstations. If someone wants to have a conversation, they can use the think tanks, and project areas offer the opportunity to work in teams. The special feature: Every space is there for everyone - here we use the sharing idea and project it onto the work environment: co-working spaces, living room-like seating areas, social spaces and action rooms, i.e. game rooms with a foosball table or table tennis table, offer everyone the opportunity to network - or simply take a break.
Catering is provided by the OTTO-Kochwerk with three different canteens and two bistros. There is a varied breakfast, as well as daily changing lunch offers, various salad bars and also vegetarian to vegan options. And especially in the warmer months, the boulevard at the heart of the OTTO campus, planted with greenery and equipped with a fountain, invites you to enjoy your break outside - or to work there.
The New Work concept is not only found on the OTTO campus and in the offices. Our flexitime system with working time account means that the working day can be flexibly structured. Overtime is recorded and must be compensated for. Why time recording is important to us at OTTO is explained by our HR Director Katy in the Newsroom. With laptops, the necessary IT infrastructure and tools such as Office 365, we at OTTO have created an appropriate basis for location- and time-independent working. And mobile working is also becoming more and more of a reality at OTTO. Whether you want to work on a project in a concentrated manner or tradesmen have announced their arrival: There are days when mobile working makes a lot of things easier and provides the space and peace and quiet you need.
Part-time work, parental leave, job sharing or sabbaticals - at OTTO there are a number of ways to realize individual life models in different phases of life and to reconcile them with work. Various personal stories about our working time models can be found in the OTTO Newsroom. For example, about Diedrich, a part-time manager, Hasina, who takes three months off every year to enjoy the summer, or Kristin, who runs a café in Lüneburg with friends in addition to her work as an Agile Coach.
All employees have the opportunity to participate in over 30 sports as part of the company sports program, and our Fitness Lounge on campus offers qualified trainers, modern equipment and a varied course program. The company's internal Mindful@OTTO initiative, a health management measure, focuses on the mental, physical and social health of our colleagues. Particularly in times of comprehensive change, a vital organization is crucial - not only for OTTO, but also for each individual. Accordingly, the campaign clarifies, promotes dialog and derives concrete measures. From mindfulness and stress management courses to a meditation room, there are many ways to deal with the challenges of the working world. Want to get more insights into the working world at OTTO?
