More than 350 employees from a wide range of disciplines work in cross-functional teams in our e-commerce division, continuously developing the otto.de platform as part of an agile product development process. We offer our customers a diverse range of products and brands - with millions of articles and tools for smart and personal advice.
But what does it actually look like behind the scenes? How is a new feature planned for otto.de and who is responsible for which part? In a large company like OTTO, there are many different areas of responsibility - no wonder with almost 5,000 employees. To give you an overview, we'll introduce you to some of the most important roles and functions at otto.de. One thing first: even within the individual roles, no two jobs are the same. You can find the full range of opportunities directly in our job search.
Hannes works in the E-Commerce Security team and is Project Lead there. He supports his team in the coordination of tasks. He organizes coordination of the individual tasks so that his team has an overview of the upcoming topics. The organization takes place in the agile process via a digital Kanban board and is controlled by Hannes. This way, all team members know what is currently pending, what still needs to be done, or what has already been checked off. Hannes also organizes cross-departmental appointments. During a product development process, he takes care of communication with stakeholders. He clarifies their requirements at kick-off meetings and keeps them informed about further progress. As part of the lateral leadership of the team, he has overall responsibility for all projects. He also keeps track of scheduling and budget and clarifies staffing needs with disciplinary leadership.
Apps and platforms should be as practical and intuitive as possible. The "User Experience" department looks at the online store otto.de & the OTTO app (iOS & Android) through the eyes of users and familiarizes itself with their needs and motivations. Lara is a UX manager and uses various methods for this, such as user experience tests or conducts online surveys. But she also uses more complex methods, such as KANO or conjoint analyses. Based on the results, she derives how our platform should be further developed for an optimal customer experience. Her findings help our UX designers to create user-centric product and feature concepts. Lara's primary role is at the beginning and end of the product development cycle: at the beginning to capture user needs and at the end to validate the solutions developed. In doing so, she works closely with the analysts.
Our digital analysts use quantitative methods to track customer perception and behavior on our website in order to derive improvements. Jannis is a digital analyst in the area of e-commerce analytics. He works in one of otto.de's cross-functional agile product teams and is responsible as an analytical consultant for data- and insight-driven development. In collaboration with the UX managers, he analyzes the needs of our customers in order to make the customer experience on our platform as good as possible. In addition, he is responsible for the conception and execution of A/B tests. Using selected KPIs, changes on otto.de can be made measurable and data-driven decisions can be made based on customer behavior. By evaluating and processing the findings, he supports the product owner in the further development of the product.
Software developers are basically there to develop otto.de as a platform. Hanno is a software developer in the search function team. His tasks are the conception, implementation and support of new and existing features on otto.de. With his team, he is constantly improving the search features so that our customers have the best possible shopping experience on our platform. This works via agile software development with Scrum or Kanban. In addition to the conception and implementation of product strategy and product development, there is a lively exchange with the team in meetings and pair programming sessions. In this way, the OTTO app and the online store are constantly optimized in cross-functional exchange with colleagues. He becomes active in the product development process as soon as a problem is identified. He then accompanies the problem-solving process from conception to final implementation on otto.de.
Our teams work with design thinking methods that help to make our product development cycle as efficient as possible. Simplified, the theory of the process looks something like this: In order to develop new applications for otto.de, we familiarize ourselves with the possible needs and problems of our customers, but also consider opportunities for improvement and potential. This is where our UX managers come in. In the so-called product discovery, they put themselves in the customer's perspective and observe the status quo. Through experiments and surveys, they define target group-specific wishes and requirements for otto.de and thus prepare the basis for the development cycle. There is always potential for development. That's why, in each development cycle, the teams have to decide on a specific problem to solve. The product managers accompany the process from the idea to the live go-live and support their team with technical product data know-how.
As soon as a problem has been defined, the joint brainstorming phase begins. In this phase, all possible solutions are initially considered. Here, too, however, a specific solution must be agreed upon in order to make product development as efficient as possible.
The next step is to implement the solution idea(s) as prototypes. The development of the prototypes is primarily the responsibility of our UX designers*. The prototypes are generated by them in our UX lab using special software and tested and further developed on test persons. Only then do they go into implementation and are integrated into otto.de by our software developers.
Our digital analysts then evaluate how the modified features are received by our customers. This allows us to decide whether we want to develop them further, or whether we are satisfied for the time being and move on to the next problem. As our features are always being adapted and improved, the product development process is understood as a cycle.
Good day! I have a question. Does your company have an online program that contacts people and asks them to register to work with you. The job description is promoting your products online and getting a commission. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
Hi, thank your for your comment and your hint. We do not offer jobs on a commission basis to evaluate or test our platform. If you have received such a request, it is probably a scam. Please do not respond to it. Thank you! Best regards, OTTO HR team
