Personality-centered recruiting

Because for us the human being counts

Personality analyses in the recruiting process can be a great added value - and not only for the company side. After all, when aspects such as transparency, comprehensibility and science are the focus, they enable the candidate's own further development and the consideration of personality from a new perspective. We have recently started offering a voluntary personality analysis to our applicants applying for permanent positions. Both the applicants and the HR managers receive the results before the interview.

For the analysis, we cooperate with LINC, a spin-off of the University of Lüneburg. LINC's tool is based on the standard psychological model BIG FIVE. According to current research, this model is the best-researched personality model in psychology.

We talked to Pauline from the recruiting team about why the personality of applicants is so important to us. Pauline studied psychology, has been working at OTTO since 2019 and is active in the area of diagnostics, among other things.

Pauline, why is the personality of applicants so important to us?

"In addition to professional characteristics, personality plays a major role for us, as we are a very people-centric company. We want to find out right at the beginning who is sitting across from us and whether this person could fit into the team and company and would be happy with us."

What do personality assessments tell us about ourselves?

"In general, personality analyses differ greatly in their quality. Therefore, I can only speak for the tool we use, the LINC Personality Profiler. This can map the individuality of the personalities very well due to the diversity of the facets identified - in this way, the LPP succeeds in providing a differentiated view of the character with thousands of different possible combinations. And since our personalities are comparable to fingerprints in their individuality, we believe this is also necessary for such a tool. Pigeonholing and dividing the personality into a few basic types is too simplified and therefore not sufficient. The character traits recorded in the LPP can then in turn be used to draw conclusions about behavioral preferences.

Incidentally, personality is generally a very stable construct. It stabilizes in our early twenties and usually changes very little thereafter."

Are you then looking for a certain kind of personality that is perhaps even always the same?

"No, absolutely not. Diversity is the key word here. Diversity does not just mean differences in demographic characteristics, but also differences in personality traits. In this way, the individual team members can complement each other optimally and serve diverse aspects of the work through their different behavioral preferences. In general, the LPP is merely our basis for discussion. There is no right or wrong and we do not make our decision for or against applicants based on the results of the tool. We are much more interested in how the person reflects on themselves and how the personality traits manifest themselves in everyday life, or influence behavioral styles."

Does the personality analysis also have advantages for the applicants?

"Yes, definitely. And that's exactly what we get back from the applicants. We received a lot of feedback, especially during our pilot phase. We often received feedback that the analysis helped us to deepen our own reflection."

And if someone doesn't want to do the personality analysis?

"Of course, that's not a problem. The personality analysis is voluntary, so if someone decides against it, there's no disadvantage for the applicant."

Why did OTTO choose the LINC Personality Profiler?

"We spent almost a year looking for a suitable tool for us. In the process, we paid attention to many aspects: We had a high scientific standard; the tool should also be understandable for laypersons and transparency for both sides was particularly important to us. With our current tool, all of this is given. The applicants themselves receive the results report, which is comprehensible and rich in content."

LINC Personality Profiler (LPP)

LINC Personality Profiler is an online personality analysis tool based on the most profound model of personality psychology - the BIG FIVE. The tool aims to paint a holistic picture of personality and captures character traits, motives and competencies. The results offer users the chance to take a new look at their own personality and thus develop themselves further.
