We're already in the thick of the application process for 2023 - and we offer many exciting apprenticeships and dual study programs. But how do you actually know if an apprenticeship is right for you? As one of Hamburg's largest trainers, we feel it is our responsibility to provide young adults with advice on their career orientation and thus also on the choice of type of training. We talked to Nicole, Head of HR Marketing and Training, about support measures for career orientation and asked her for her personal tips.
"I used all the options available to me for my career orientation: Counseling at the agency, conversations with friends, classmates and teachers. I also took career tests and read many magazines on the subject. However, contrary to my hopes, I didn't find an answer to the question of whether an apprenticeship or a degree would suit me better. Instead, I first worked in the catering industry and ultimately came to the decision to study business administration by chance. I'm very glad I made this decision, because it gives me a very broad and, above all, future-proof base and I've always been able to develop in a variety of ways throughout my career."
"I recommend that you start by answering the following questions : What do I really want? What are MY strengths and passions? What are the topics that interest ME? It also helps to visualize yourself. You can collect facts and figures about yourself and use the opportunity to gain different experiences. This can be done, for example, through temporary jobs, in the club, through internships, blogs, tutorials or question tools. To get closer to the right job profiles or professions, you can browse job ads and talk to experienced professionals. This will help you get closer to your answer: how exactly do I want to work what? And only then do you decide on the form of training."
You are interested in entry in the tech sector?
"With an apprenticeship, you combine theoretical basics in vocational school and at the same time go through various departments in the training company. You decide on a particular occupation. The advantage is that this way you have the opportunity to start your professional life regardless of your school-leaving qualification.
In full-time studies , you gain a deep insight into a field of study of your choice and still have all the freedom to shape your professional career through internships and student jobs.
In dual studies, you combine both options, achieving a technical depth in your studies and practical experience through the practical assignments in the company. In Hamburg, there is even the study-integrating training, in which you start with the training and the study at the same time and can decide on the way whether you also finish the study parallel to the training.
Which form of training is ultimately right for you depends, of course, on your career aspirations, which in turn are closely linked to your personal interests. Among other things, things like passion, talent, but also earning potential and flexibility can play a role here. It's best to first get an overview of your ideas and then use these as the basis for the decision-making phase."
Have a concrete idea. Formulate your career aspirations realistically and tangibly: I want to become an expert in social media.
Take a proactive approach. Don't let more complex applications for a training position scare you off.
Swim against the tide. Don't follow a trend if the profession isn't for you. Be brave and take the path that suits you.
