"The OTTO BI consists only of data!"
Of course, that's not quite true: there is much more behind the OTTO Business Intelligence divisions. They are made up of a team of around 250 people, and are thus set up for a wide variety of roles and functions. One of them is Nina, who works as a Data Engineer in the Online Marketing Technology & Infrastructure team. As a rule, five to ten colleagues work together cross-functionally to build and support the platform and the products that run on it. Ideally, each team has a product owner and an agile coach or master.
"Driven by data, inspired by our customers" is the mission of OTTO BI. The team consists of unconventionally thinking strategists, hands-on product managers, resourceful inventors, and lightning-quick data scientists who work together to implement new, data-driven solutions. The goal: to create added value for customers with business intelligence.
But what does it actually look like behind the scenes? How are new and ongoing products built on the platform and who is responsible for which tasks? In a large company like OTTO, there are many different areas of responsibility - that's close to over 6,000 employees*. Keeping track of so many roles and functions is not that easy. What exactly does a Data Scientist do?
A data scientist analyzes various, often very large data sources. From this, he or she derives new and commercially relevant information for us or the customers and needs a good understanding of customer, product, campaign and logistics data for this process. At our company, a Data Scientist should be a team player who, in addition to knowledge of data and methods, must also have the ability to bring his or her analyses and results closer to people from a wide range of areas .
Where at OTTO would problems occur without Data Scientists?
If there were no data science, the warehouses would not be optimally filled, for example. Customers would have to wait longer for answers to e-mail inquiries and we would not be able to suggest the most suitable alternative articles to them. Basically, analytics and business logic would have to replace the current statistical models. What exactly would that lead to? Quite simply, this predictive capability would be limited and so would the attractive customer experience at otto.de.

What exactly does a software developer do?
A software developer is involved in the creation and operation of software. The work content can be very different, since there are many different focuses in the field. As diverse as OTTO itself is, so is the IT sector and with it the job descriptions of software developers. The job has a different focus in the various teams, so that everyone can find an individual area for themselves and contribute and develop their own skills.
Where would problems occur without Software Developer?
Without our devs, there would be no one to drive OTTO's technology forward in the engine room. There would be no code behind "otto.de," no high-performance platform, and a multitude of manual processes. So software developers play a key role in supporting our transformation into a platform.

At which positions at OTTO would you appear without a product owner?
Without product owners, many products would take longer to develop, would be ready for use much later, or would have long since been overtaken by the current market situation after completion. As a result, many customers would be less satisfied. In addition, a product owner is a mediator between two worlds: On the one hand, there are the customers, with whom he or she communicates every day in order to get to the heart of their requirements. On the other hand, there is the team of which he is a part and which he helps to develop only what the customers demand/need/use.

The BI's customers would not be able to grasp what the BI does and how it benefits them.
