Day 1: Brainstorming and coding
After an introduction to the three topic blocks Internet of Things (IoT), Machine Learning and Powerapps by Microsoft Azure specialists, the participants could choose for themselves which topic they would like to work on. This resulted in a total of six groups (two per topic block). Afterwards, the participants went straight into the Design Thinking session. Within an hour and a half, the teams were asked to agree on a use case and set goals that they wanted to achieve by the end of the hackathon. These goals were presented to the entire plenary. All use cases had to offer clear benefits for colleagues and business.
Great ideas have come out of this:
- A returnable shipping box with IoT connectivity.
- A predictive analytics solution for the utilization of the canteens on the OTTO campus
- An onboarding application created with Powerapps
- An IoT software that measures utilization, noise level & temperature, etc. in the shared desk area
- An image recognition system that, for example, suggests matching furniture to the user for photographed products
- The MAMPF app, which was created with the help of Powerapps and displays, among other things, the capacity utilization of the various canteens on the OTTO campus.
Afterwards, it was code, code, code. After a short snack at the bagel buffet, day 1 came to a close with a review of what had been learned and worked on.
Day 2: Prototype development and pitch presentations
The second day was dedicated to prototype development and pitch presentations. Programs were written, bugs were searched for and slides were created. Microsofties" were always on hand to give advice and support to the groups. In preparation for the final pitches, things got hectic once again.
In the end, all groups finished and presented great prototypes and use cases. There were two prizes for the winners. A jury prize from Otto Group colleagues and a Microsoft employee, as well as the audience prize, which was awarded by all participants of the hackathon.
And the winners are...
Jury Award:- "Desk-Friend" - IoT application that measures workload, noise level & temperature, etc. in shared desk area.
Audience Award:- "ReUseBox" - Returnable shipping box with IoT connectivity.
- "Krausel" - image recognition that suggests matching furniture to the user for photographed products, for example.
- The various ideas are now being tested for feasibility in the Group companies, for example OTTO. What will the next steps look like? Stay tuned!
To conclude the evening and to celebrate the results, Microsoft sponsored pizza and beer 4 all! At this point, we would like to thank the specialists from Microsoft for their great support, the organization team for the smooth running of the event, our Kochwerk for the tasty catering and Mike from the Woodbang Factory for the perfect setting. Cheers!
