Back in 2019, the Otto Group IT launched the so-called Cloud Circle – a community that provides an open exchange on cloud technologies and projects within the Otto Group. Due to the pandemic and other challenges, we all experienced stormy times. We needed to change the concept and are now hosting an open Cloud Café every 4 weeks.
In this post I would like to give you an overview of what the Cloud Circle and Cloud Café are all about, where we are right now – and where we want to go.
Cloud Circle? Cloud Café? Let us start at the beginning.
The cloud transformation is a key enabler of innovative digital business processes in our industry. Innovations play a major role here, especially in the rapidly growing e-commerce sector. This ‘cloudy’ graphic shows the benefits of cloud technologies:
At OTTO, the E-Commerce and Business Intelligence Divisions were the early adopters, and now almost all Group subsidiaries use cloud technologies. An example at Otto Group IT is the migration of the SAP environment to the Google Cloud.
Cloud technologies continue to evolve at a fierce pace, meaning a flexible, agile working environment is needed, as well as interdisciplinary teams composed of employees from different Divisions and disciplines.
That's why the Cloud Circle was launched in May 2019, initially with 33 members from different areas of the Otto Group.
The Cloud Circle is a community that provides an open exchange on cloud technologies and projects within the Otto Group. Today, the Cloud Circle has round about 400 members and comprises colleagues from OTTO, Bonprix, Hermes and further Group companies. This allows colleagues from different teams to pool and combine their know-how to reach their goals faster.
Meetups took place roughly every four weeks at the office. At each meetup, a member presents a current project or tool, which is then discussed. Since the pandemic kicked in, we met remotely for obvious reasons. The Cloud Circle clearly added value – that’s why we have also launched two further communities: The Machine Learning Community and the Security Circle.
What are we planning next?
