About me

I‘m a Computer Science graduate, working as an Executive Software Architect in the E-Commerce Division. After several stints in software development for various medium-sized companies I joined OTTO in 2009. In 2010 I developed the basics for the new otto.de webshop architecture through prototyping.

    Scaling Agile @ OTTO

    Agile Development is definitely nothing new at OTTO – the term has long since reached Peak Hype. The first generation of Developers for whom 'Agile' is ancient history (or simply their regular working routine) are now almost Senior Devs. In brief, the term has lost its gloss and what we might now call 'Agile' is often a mix of Agile, Lean, XP and other working principles.

    On Monoliths and Microservices

    When we began the development of our new Online Shop otto.de, we chose a distributed, vertical-style architecture at an early stage of the process. Growing volumes of data, increasing loads and the need to scale the organization, all of these forced us to rethink our approach.

    Von Monolithen und Microservices

    Als wir 2011 mit der Neuentwicklung unseres Online-Shops otto.de starteten, wählten wir frühzeitig eine verteilte, vertikal geschnittene Architektur. Erfahrungen mit unserem Altsystem zeigten uns, dass eine monolithische Architektur den stetig wachsenden Anforderungen nicht gewachsen ist: Steigendes Datenvolumen, immer höhere Last und die Notwendigkeit, auch organisatorisch skalieren zu können, erforderten ein Umdenken.
